October 14th, at 7:00 pm “Lessons for Living Human”

No matter who we are or what we do we are communicating with a human being.

Whether interacting with others or becoming more mindful of our own internal processes, there are a handful of organizing assumptions that aid in understanding and beneficial communication both within ourselves and with our fellow human beings.

In this month’s meeting we’ll look at some of these presupposition and how their use can increase our abilities to understand, relate and communicate.

Shawn Summers is a certified hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and the current president of the Washington Chapter of the National Guild of Hypnotist. Through his years as a martial arts instructor, he has honed his ability to distill information and, through a variety of approaches, achieve knowledge transfer to his students, increasing their personal capabilities.

Friday, September 9th, at 7:00 pm “The Meta Model for Everyday”

The day to day utility of the Meta Model is sometimes overlooked. While it is a powerful tool in a therapeutic context, its challenges to problematic language patterns can come across as confrontational, becoming a source of resistance rather than assistance.

In this month’s meeting we’ll look at day to day uses of the Meta Model in informal interactions with family, friends, colleagues and ourselves, and focus on a few of the most common patterns.

No prior knowledge of the Meta Model is needed to for this meeting.

Shawn Summers is a certified hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and the current president of the Washington Chapter of the National Guild of Hypnotist. Friday, August 12th, at 7:00 pm “The Meta Model”

The models we make of the world around us with our brains and our language are not the world itself but representations of it. This is the basic principal behind the Meta Model.

More than 40 years after it was first published the Meta Model is still a powerful tool to help you recognize, and address, language that deletes, distorts and generalizes thinking in ways that constrict our mental maps and therefore our choices and possibilities.

By using questions that bring attention to these limiting language patterns we can help to broaden these maps and the choices and possibilities that come from them.

Come join us this Friday, August 12th, at 7:00 pm for “The Meta Model”

Friday, July 8th “The 6 Steps of the Elman Induction Process”

The name Dave Elman is iconic in modern hypnotherapy and the famous “Elman Induction” is still taught around the world nearly fifty years after his passing.

Many, possibly most, hypnotherapists believe they understand the Elman Induction, yet they treat it as a script rather than as the dynamic process it is intended to be. This month we’ll look at, and practice, the six process steps that make up this famous, often misunderstood induction. Whether you want to add this powerful tool to your skill set, or perhaps see a familiar tool in a new way, this evening is for you.

Shawn Summers is a certified hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and the current president of the Washington Chapter of the National Guild of Hypnotist. Friday, May 13th, “Sleight of Mouth Part II” with Shawn Summers

Continuing the April meeting we look at the 14 Sleight of Mouth patterns and some strategies for their use.

Shawn Summers is a certified hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and the current president of the Washington Chapter of the National Guild of Hypnotist. Through his years as a martial arts instructor he has honed his ability to distill information and, through a variety of approaches, achieve knowledge transfer to his students increasing their personal capabilities.

Friday, April 8th, Sleight of Mouth with Shawn Summers

As sleight of hand can shift and change our perceptions of what is and what is possible in our physical space, so sleight of mouth can shift and change our perceptions of what is and what is possible in our mental and emotional space.

Sleight of mouth is more than a list of verbal patterns. It is a form of verbal artistry that, through the surface structure of our language, can reach and affect the mental maps which generate our behaviors.

In this presentation we’ll talk a bit about the history of sleight of mouth, its conceptual underpinnings, and the patterns themselves.

Sometimes learning a few simple tricks can be the first steps to learning magic.

Somatic Healing with Linda Baker

Somatic Healing is a hypnotic technique that incorporates suggestion, imagery and hypnotic movement coupled with the wisdom of the Inner Healer to assist the client in recovery from illness and injury, and with the elimination of chronic pain.

Often times our physical challenges are a reflection of the programs we hold in the cells of our body. These programs may originate in past lives, conception, the birth process, childhood, from other traumatic experiences or authoritarian programming.

In her presentation Linda will discuss the origin of Somatic Healing, how it can help your clients, and with time permitting, give a short demonstration.

Linda Baker’s books include The Bridge Between Worlds — The Miracle of Following the Heart and Soul Contracts — How They Affect Your Life and Your Relationships. She is certified in Reality Therapy with Dr. William Glasser, studied Alchemical hypnotherapy with David Quigley and earned the title of Certified Hypnotherapist. Chapter Meeting Friday, July 10th

A Presentation of the Film “The Tapping Solution”

As part of our mission to support our members, we have from time to time had presentations on various therapeutic modalities available in the market place. The purpose of this is to help members be aware of other modalities, whether as something they may wish to incorporate into their practices or simply to be more knowledgeable and conversant on a variety of modalities with colleagues and clients.

In the July meeting we continue this with a showing of “The Tapping Solution” a documentary film by Nick Ortner on the practice of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). A therapy popularized through Gary Craig’s EFT Handbook, published in the late 1990s and similar in ways to the TFT (Thought Field Therapy) of Roger Callahan. Ortner describes EFT as “a type of Meridian Tapping that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology with startling results.”

Due to the permissions agreement made with creator of the film. We will be waving any charge for attending this showing, so tell your friends and bring them along! We look forward to an interesting evening of viewing and discussion.

Come join us This Friday, July 10th, for an EFT evening.

The Registered Hypnotherapist Credential in Washington, A Proactive Conversation – Tim Livingston

In 2006 a Seattle Times Article brought to public attention some cases of extreme misconduct by Registered Counselors in Washington State. Although these individuals amounted to a minuscule fraction of the more than 17,000 Registered Counselors in the state at that time, the misconduct in these cases and the media focus on it, lead to a public outcry, new legislation, the credential being abolished and a Registered Counselor community in a state of reaction to the massive changes happening to them.
Tim Livingston was a central figure in the Registered Counselor community’s reaction to those changes and he is joining us Friday April 10th to talk about a proactive approach to shaping potential changes to the Registered Hypnotherapist Credential.
Tim Livingston is President of the Washington Professional Counselors Association (WAPROCA). He is also a Registered Hypnotherapist. The Registered Hypnotherapist Credential in Washington, a Status Update with Tim Livingston

At the top of this month’s meeting we’ll hear from Tim Livingston. Tim is President of the Washington Professional Counselors Association (WAPROCA). He is also a Registered Hypnotherapist. He has been involved in the many aspects of work with our legislature and saw firsthand how quickly our state’s Registered Counselor Credential was abolished, after a single disciplinary case drew media attention. The same could happen to our Registered Hypnotherapist Credential. “I’d hate to see the R.H. credential be directed by policy or rule that was not of our own making.” said Tim “That is the importance of being proactive”.

We at NGHWA could not agree more and we are happy to be able to provide a forum to begin this discussion.
This is an important issue for everyone in our field. Please join us this Friday and spread the word to other Hypnotherapists you know.

PSYCH-K is a unique and direct way to communicate with your subconscious mind to change subconscious beliefs that perpetuate old, unwanted habits of thinking and behaving that sabotage our goals and may limit us in any area of life.

The “psych” in PSYCH-K is a variant spelling of the word psyche, meaning “mind,” “soul,” or “spirit.” Thus the overall goal of PSYCH-K is to help you free your mind from beliefs that limit your recognition of yourself as a spiritual being having a human experience.

Joan is an International PSYCH-K Instructor who has taught over 150 workshops around the world. Re his presentation “What Is Parts Therapy?”

Parts therapy is based on the concept that we all have various aspects of the personality. In other words, we wear many hats. Pioneered by the late Charles Tebbetts, parts therapy can effectively help clients resolve inner conflicts, overcoming bad habits even after traditional hypnotic techniques have failed. Roy has updated the work of Tebbetts over the years, and authored a book on parts therapy published by Crown House Publishing. There are variations as well, which he will briefly overview in his presentation. Time permitting, he will briefly talk about hypnosis history in the Pacific Northwest dating back over three decades..

Connie Brannan – The Power of Positive Aversion

Connie Brannan, CHt, is, to list just a few of her credentials, a Neuro-Linguistic Hypnotherapist, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Licensed Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming™, Professional Conversational Hypnotherapist, Design Human Engineer™, Persuasion Engineer™, Timeline Coach & Regression Specialist, Usui Reiki Master Teacher, and Matrix Energetics Practitioner. She operates a clinical NLP and hypnotherapy practice out of Bellevue, WA, called Mindworks Hypnosis as well as training NLP with her husband, Michael Brannan, in their private career school, Mindworks NLP, through the Society of Neuro-Linguistic Programming™. She is a published author and creator of several hypnosis self-help audio CD products. She conducts a series of self-hypnosis workshops and teaches hypnosis for adult continuing education programs in the Seattle area

Connie regarding the Power of Positive Aversion

What would you never do? “I’d never kill anyone.” Sure, you would. If the situation was such that the killing became an imperative and appropriate response. That’s not a felt response, that’s an intellectual response. What makes your skin crawl? What is it that you would REALLY never do, such that the thought of it is so repellant and disgusting and fearful to you that it turns your stomach and your brain says about it: “That’s a big fat NO!” Eat live worms? Kiss your grandmother? Jump out of an airplane for fun?

Aversion in hypnotherapy is the art of attaching a “big fat NO” to an unwanted behavior such as smoking or eating sweets, in the mind AND the body. In this talk, I demonstrate a potent NLP technique to achieve this.
Finding and attaching the most potent multi-sensual aversion connection is very much an art form. Hypnotherapy itself is a creative art, and the more you successfully tailor ideas and associations for the person in front of you and what moves them, the more successful results you will achieve for them. Everybody is different, and their “big fat nos” are different.

In this talk we discuss aversion. Stupid, unethical aversion (you’re going to die a horrible corrosive death with illness, pain and suffering if you continue the behavior) vs. creative positive aversion. For a long time I avoided aversion suggestions altogether, because it seemed to me to be only negative and hurtful. It doesn’t have to be. Also in this talk we discuss how useful aversion is in a propulsion system to change, combined with the positive attraction of desired outcome

Chapter Meeting Friday, April 11th!

Kelly Patrick Gerling “Accessing the Deepest State of Being – Part 2”

Kelly began his work as a trainer with NLP Comprehensive in 1983. He’s worked with several major NLP training organizations, including NLP Comprehensive; Grinder, Delozier and Associates; and NLP of California. He’s trained all over the U.S., and in Mexico, Argentina, and Bali, Indonesia.

Expanding on his very well received January presentation for NGHWA we are pleased to have him back for “Accessing the Deepest State of Being – Part 2”

In Part 1, we explored how an iterative series of questions may help to access a deep state of being within yourself, or within your client. In this follow-up presentation, we will explore some variations on how to use the deepest state of being questions. These variations may include the initial framing of their use; how to use them in stories; how to use them informally in conversation; and how to use your accessing of your own deepest state of being to help clients to access their own such state. We may also explore how these powerful questions can be used in hypnotic inductions.

His websites coachingforvisionaries.com and kellygerling.com provide access to his methods, articles and models of visionary coaching and values-based leadership.

Chapter Meeting Friday, March 14th

Michael Brannan, Sleight of Mouth: Conversational Magic in Therapy and Persuasion

C. Michael Brannan, CCt, Licensed Trainer of Neuro-linguistic Programming

One exciting fact about a magic show is that it shows effects that lie beyond what we all know to be possible. Rabbits do not appear out of empty hats, and ladies to do not defy gravity by floating in space. Magicians often use techniques of misdirection and change of focus to lead the audience to experience what they thought impossible.

Many of us are equally bewitched by language, trapped by limiting beliefs and attitudes that keep us or our clients from getting the outcomes that we want. Clients believe that “smoking is an addiction” or that they “aren’t good enough” or any of the many other beliefs that stand in their way of achieving success.

Hypnotherapists often have limiting beliefs about their own practice, perhaps believing that “getting clients is difficult” or that “building a business is hard and scary.” Or perhaps that hypnotists shouldn’t make money helping others get what they want.

Like a good magic trick, Sleight of Mouth Patterns allow us to alter our perception of reality, to change how we look at things so that the things we look at change. Language creates meaning for us from our experience and that meaning expressed as beliefs or attitudes holds us back or drives us forward.

In this talk, you will learn to use Sleight of Mouth Patterns to:

Change beliefs in your clients to help them make desired changes

Change beliefs in yourself to propel you to your goals

Learn how these patterns can be used in high impact persuasion

Get more choices and flexibility in your responses to others

Whether you are a therapist or just someone looking to be more influential in all contexts, this talk is for you. The only issue is how many different ways you will be able to use these patterns to improve your life.

Ragini is an international trainer of NLP (Neuro-Linguisitic Programming) and Ericksonian-Style Hypnosis who has taught NLP and Hypnosis in America, Canada, England, Scotland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, India and run a successful private practice since 1980. She is the author of three books including her latest “Unflappable – 6-Steps To Staying Happy, Centered, & Peaceful No Matter What”

Re her presentation on “The Heart of a Growing Business”

Too many times, people think establishing and growing a small private practice is all about marketing, sales, profit, publicity, and techniques. Obviously, skill, competence, and confidence are necessary. But sustaining success in all of these areas requires three additional essentials:

Love – because the success of your business rests in your relationships – to your clients, yourself, and your goals.

Attitude – because it determines how you will meet the obstacles that arise along the way and whether you succeed or fail in navigating their learnings.

Attention – because it creates the focus and staying power you need to stay on track and manifest your dream.

In this 2 hour presentation and discussion, Ragini will share how these 3 essential qualities have kept her going through her 30 years of developing, sustaining, and expanding her career as a hypnotherapist and trainer of NLP and Ericksonian style hypnosis.

Re his presentation on “Accessing the Deepest State of Being”

Both for yourself, and for your clients, having a process for accessing the deepest state of being is useful in a number of ways. The experience is warm, moving and inspiring. The state of being itself is the underlying foundation of most of the important goals, values and dreams a person has. And because it is often not accessed, forgotten or ignored, accessing it and connecting it to problems and goals, situations and activities, enriches them with the best of a person. Come and learn this powerful, inspiring, spiritual process.

These could stem from incomplete communication or the residue of unresolved emotional trauma and neglect, much of it from the client’s childhood. Regression therapy alone is often not enough to affect a cure because the hypnotized client must do more than examine the memories and relive them.

In this presentation you will learn how Alchemical Hypnotherapy works and how it assists clients to express with the body as well as the voice all of the emotions that have been repressed and stored in the cells. Alchemical Hypnotherapy offers deep cellular healing, rescue of the inner child and, if needed helps the client in finding new parental resources, thus transforming these memories of trauma into positive resources of safety, empowerment, love, and wisdom

Participants are given the opportunity to look at where rejection impacts them in both areas and techniques for dealing and/or eliminating it.

Participants will be given techniques on developing or enhancing a winning and positive attitude. Kevin explains how the research and understanding of psychoneuroimmunology relates effectively to hypnotherapy. This knowledge gives hypnotherapy a great deal of credibility when explained to clients.

Speaker: Kevin Gieselman MA, C.Ht

His research and study in the field of Psychoneuroimmunology (research which studies the relationship between the mind, the brain and the body) has provided him with a practical and working understanding of how treatment of the entire person, not just the problem or disease, is critical and effective. Understanding the Benefits of Prenatal Bonding on the Prenate and HypnoBirthing®
Birthing Classes for Mentally and Physically Healthier Babies.
During this session we will discuss the importance of the mother-baby relationship during pregnancy. For years we have thought that the unborn could not feel emotions, pain, stress hormones from the mother and now through the use of ultrasound, we see how the fetus reacts to violence in the womb. With video and film you will witness the distress of the unborn. Attention is critically needed to this early formation of the nervous system as well as throughout the pregnancy. Science is proving everything Prenatal Psychology has been saying for 30 years. With Hypnosis we can help the mother connect with the baby in the womb. You will have a chance to witness and experience the positive attitude needed to refer or support pregnant women in our practices and help women who are attempting to achieve a pregnancy.Barbara Decker has been a childbirth educator for 40 years, a Doula for 18 years, a HypnoBirthing practitioner for 10 years, a Doula trainer for 6 years, and a Consulting Hypnotist specializing in Prenatal Bonding (BA). Before moving to Edmonds, Barb taught on Cape Cod Massachusetts. While there she formed an organization of childbirth educators, Doulas, Midwives and Nurse Managers from the local hospitals called “Childbirth with Choices”. Accessing the Kinesthetic Learner, Margot Hanson.

Life, being a journey, takes twist and turns and unexpected detours. One of my detours as a Massage Therapist was EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Technique. Over the past fourteen years of private practice and studying healing, I found that so much of our wellbeing is determined by the mind as well as the body. EFT was the vehicle that took me from body work to the mind work of hypnosis. EFT is like hypnosis or NLP in that it deals with emotional issues and breaks down patterns and programs that are already established in us, but it is also connected to the meridians of oriental medicine and our physicality. It is useful with any and all emotional dilemmas, such as fear, phobias, anger, and anxiety, as well as physical problems, such as pain and chronic disease. For someone who is kinesthetically orientated it can be a relevant connection to the subconscious. I look forward to sharing more information and a demonstration of this technique with you. – Margot Hanson.
